Porcupine -1 High Prairie - Notes from Franklin Petersen I found a huge flock of migrants. I circled it trying to find edges of flock and cutting across and into flock. I estimate it covered 40+ acres, covered with birds coming faster than I could see. Birds (all counted as "100") included Chipping Sparrow, Lazuli Bunting. Townsends Warbler, Audubon's Warlber, Western Tanager, Warbling Vireo, Orange-crowned Warbler. Chipping Sparrow probably in excess of 300. Same for Lazuli Buntings. I spent 45 minutes to an hour sorting out this huge flock. There were other birds as well but without the overwhelming numbers. This is the 3rd time this spring I've been in this sort of flock - very cool. Numbers of vireos way up this year. Number of woodpeckers down. Dallesport - Notes from Miko Ruhlen Osprey nesting on platform again in same spot as last year on the dirt road on the way to Spearfish Lake. Dirth of waterfowl and raptors. We looked and looked and couldn't even find an Am. Kestrel or Coot. Bickleton - Notes from Susan Van Leuven Hammond's Flycatcher - Small bird about 5 in. long, dark gray above and light gray below. Has a relatively large head. Sits in the top of a tree and gives a two note call (second note slurred downward). Bird throws its head back when uttering each note. Say's Phoebe: Small brown bird , looks all dark when viewed from distance. Gives a 2 note call from a perch atop ridgeline of barn. Has starlings for company. Eurasion Collared Dove: Pale colored dove or pigeon, observed twice flying up from the road. A wide white or light gray band along the trailing edge of the tail feathers suggests that it might actually be a band-tailed pigeon. However, the bird looks too light in color for that species. Did not get a clear view of the neck so diagnostic markings are unknown. Small farms and residences nearby, situated in a predominantly oak forest. Lower Rock Creek - Note from Stephen Bradley Great Horned Owls - 2 adults (counted) and 1 downy young (not fledged). 1 Coyote.
